Búzios is a resort town located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, 180 km northwest of Rio de Janeiro city. Its population was 28.653 in 2009 (IBGE) and its area is 69 km². Búzios is an international touristic destination, famous for its astonishing beaches and for an active nightlife and restaurants.
There are 23 beaches in total, the ones on the west coast are calm with clear waters while the east coast beaches face the open sea and are wilder and attract surfers and water sports enthusiasts. Geriba is an open sea beach with two kilometers extension good for sports as surf, wind-surf, kite-surf and volleyball. Another example is the Tartaruga beach with transparent and warmer waters, where are common three species of marine turtles.
Buzios was popularized by legendary movie star Brigitte Bardot in the 1960s, and her statue sits along the main street of Búzios, the Rua das Pedras (Street of Stones). Located downtown, Rua das Pedras is the most famous in Búzios. It works as a meeting point, a shopping center at open sky, with local and international stores. The leisure area is filled with casual bars and restaurants for all tastes, gathering the best at Búzios.
